History and Locale

It was Krishnamurti’s oft-expressed wish that there should be a school in Western India. This wish was realized during the Birth Centenary year of Krishnamurti with the commencement of Sahyadri School in September, 1995.

Krishnamurti had been coming to Mumbai from 1948 to 1985 giving public talks and interviews. He had also been to Pune on three occasions. The region had felt and expressed the need for a Krishnamurti School. The vision for a school in Western India was born in response to this long felt need. The late Shri Achyut Patwardhan’s tireless efforts and generous assistance from several well-wishers saw this vision turn into reality by November, 1994.

The school now has about 215 students. Less than 2 hours drive from Pune and about 4 hours from Mumbai, the history and location of this Krishnamurti school draws learners from far and near.

The school is located on Tiwai Hill, a plateau 770 m. above sea level, overlooking the Chas-Kaman Dam. Surrounded by gently sloping hills and valleys, this slice of the Deccan rain shadow has its origin in pre-historic volcanic activity. The natural vegetation is mainly scrub and the slopes have fairly dense forests of teak and jambul. In summer the hillscape is dry and magnificently golden brown. Later, with the onset of rains the ranges turn a lush green. It is home to hundreds of species of flora and fauna. Plantation activity initiated by the school has rendered the hilltop verdant with fruit trees like guava, chickoo and mango and flowering trees like gulmohar, bauhinia and gliricidia.
